About
This site is for people who produce primarily text-based print publications, but do not have a background in design or typesetting. It is primarily aimed at users of QuarkXPress and Microsoft Word and assumes a reasonable knowledge of both. Even if you don’t use Quark, you may well find the Word articles useful.
As an editor and writer of ten years’ experience, I always worked on layouts in QuarkXPress originated by designers. In my current position, I suddenly found myself doing my job with out-of-house designers, which I found immensely frustrating — especially when I was editing 20,000 word books by email and telephone. And paying £75/hr for the privilege.
I eventually persuaded my bosses to let me do the basic jobs myself and built up an in-house DTP facility. Thankfully, I’ve had no major problems, but I was always on the lookout for ways to improve efficiency and save time. I was unable to find a good single resource on the internet for non-designers, hence this website.
Anyway, I hope you find this site useful. Please contact me if you have any ideas for articles and I’ll do my best to help. If you’re doing something similar, I’ll be happy to link to you.
Many thanks
